3rd Gen Engine Failures

A silly as it may sound I'm not sure if those two things are correlated.
The exact same could easily be said about the complaint posted and the recalled engines. Honestly, right now, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a Tundra. Even a used '22-23. I'm much more gun-shy towards any of the brand-new designs until they get the bugs worked.

If I like the truck it wouldn't keep me away either, hell I bought a 6.2 GM with known lifter issues... though it turned out later to be much more prevalent in the 5.3.

Though I am buying an extended warranty on any vehicle purchase anymore as I did on my current.

I just think it's interesting that the engine failures keep showing up. It seemed like when Toyota announced the recall a lot of people expected it to expand to the hybrids at least or into later years. That has yet to be seen.

I don't always think quality and sales numbers tell the full story, just take a look at Ford, but you got to think the Toyota dealership are really hoping it was only the debris issue and it's solved.

Someone made a pretty interesting comment on YouTube. He said, something like, the people who watch videos online and are on forums aren't the majority of the buying public.

He also pointed out that two people he knows just bought a new Tundra. They had never heard of the engine recall.

Yeah we've talked about that before for sure. My father-in-law buys Rams because they have the best vision over the hood out of the front... Both he and his wife are short.

I've also known lots of people who go down to purchase a "truck" that means they hit the dealers in there very local area and by the best looking one that they can afford. That's usually a Ford or Chevy because, dealer network.

Very good point. A lot of people don’t do any research and just pop by their local dealers to see what they have. They look to buy something off the lot.
I am pretty practical as far as the capabilities of any truck I buy but I definitely have to like the look of it or it’s a no go. Some people are 100% practical on their vehicle purchases. I’ve done that many years ago and found I was less enthusiastic about taking care of the vehicle because it didn’t give me a positive feeling looking at it and getting in.
For me the local dealership has impact as far as service and who is willing to deal at the time I’m looking to buy. On my last truck GM and Toyota had no incentives, I didn’t like the look of the Fords, and Ram were clearing inventory. Made a huge difference on price. I’m sure it’s a common experience among buyers.

I read though the actual filled complaint, it seems like the owners are actually talking about what is known as the dead pedal/hessitation issue where the truck fails to respond when you do a rolling stop. Then the document tries to roll that into the engine recall issue. I don't think the issue described is a result of an engine failure. Toyota Claimed to fix that issue in a TCU update back in 2022 but from what you can tell from NHTSA complaints the issue still persits in some number of trucks well into 2024.

What I could hope is that brings light for toyota to put effort in resolving that issue. If you search all TSB's there are similar delay/hestiation TSB's that have rolled out for the Highlander. I've experenced that issue, but its really hard to replicate. Since the last TCU update that was part of a Recall for the trucking moving in neutural, the delay if it happens seems to be in the 365 ms range. I have not personally expernenced multiple second delays since, although I did experence one or two of those events when I first got the truck.

But there is no context with that one single complaint. A random engine failure could be anything. And make no mistake, every single brand has at least one.
Besides, it's not like the complaints to the NHTSA are formally verified to be legit. I could file a complaint today on any brand out there.
