2025 Toyota 4 Runner payload concerns

The first drive event for the 2025 Toyota 4 Runner was this week and I was talking with a few other media at the event about payload. The question is about how low the number is for payload. I checked one of the door tags, as you know I do, and it said 800 lbs. That's quite low don't you think?

Video out next week.

Hmm interesting, I would also like more info. The average family of 4, with two children ages 9-13 is going to weigh between 550-600lbs. Not much room left.

So, I just did a quick Google search and found 2 reddit posts. One was for a Toyota Land Cruiser with 1100 lbs of pyaload. Another was a GX Overtrail with 1546 lbs of payload.

The vehicles we drove were pre-production and I don't know if that plays any role. I'm in the "it shouldn't" camp, but I don't know.

Honda Passport has 1300 and Mazda CX 70 has 1200. So yeah 800 is relatively low.

Unfortunately it seems that most buyers of SUV's don't even think about payload. They just assume the vehicle will carry their family of 4 and whatever they can fit in and on it. It doesn't help that these, especially the 4Runner, are marketed as utility off-road/overlanding/adventure rigs.

The Subaru Outback is 900-1200 depending on spec.

My 2011 4Runner trail edition had a payload of 900 pounds, so I'm not surprised by those numbers. It was the main reason why I changed it, I was over payload all the time when I went hunting, even by myself...

But even above max payload, it always performed well.

Here's another funny thing, the luggage rack on top can hold like 675 lbs stationary and 150 lbs when in motion. Definitely set up for a roof tent. The weight difference is quite something IMO.

When I go to Toyota's web site and subtract max gvw from truck weight I come up with a paw load of around 1,000 pounds expect for the Trail hunter which is around 900 pounds.
