Used Full sized truck - purchase

Hello everyone,
I’m in the market for a full-size 4x4 truck to replace my 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 LS. After 23 good years, it finally gave out, so now I’m looking for a new (used) truck, ideally something between model years 2014 and 2023.

From what I’ve researched, the 2007 and newer Silverado 1500s seem to have issues with AFM and the newer 8- and 10-speed transmissions. Some people suggest going with a 2500 since they don’t use AFM, while others recommend deleting the AFM system, but that can get pricey.

I’m not married to Chevy, even though mine served me well for over two decades. I wanted to ask this forum for your suggestions and real-world opinions on full-size trucks you’ve owned, what’s worked well for you and what to avoid?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi!

What’s your use case for the truck and do you have any preferences? V8 vs V6, short box vs long box, crew cab vs regular cab, etc.

I do some offloading. I do like having power and around a 6ft bed with a crew cab. I mountain bike ride and we travel so having space in the back for adults is what I am looking for. I know I want a crew cab. Thanks

And where do you live? I ask because not having 4x4 anywhere in the upper states and Canada will make your truck worth a lot less if you ever need to get rid of it. Sometimes it’s better to pay upfront than latter down the road.

Also, and probably the most important question lol, what’s your budget?

Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them. They're all going to be good and they're all going to have that one issue.

Personally, I'd look at a Ram 1500 Rebel

Used ram warlock, used GMC or Chevy in a trim you like. Ford has been having too many transmission and camshaft issues in the past couple of years.

Are you referring to the GMC or Chevy 1500's or the 2500's? I am really skeptical of the 1500s because of the afm/dfm.

1500 unless your use case justifies the use of a 2500 and it does not appear to be the case.

I would not worry that much about the afm/dfm debacle even people that have disabled the system from day one are having the same issues has people that have not disabled it. You could also choose from the 3.0l diesel or the 2.7 turbomax if you're still not comfortable.

Thank you for your input. From what I've read and people I've talked with. Most say to stay away from those engines with the afm/dfm.
