I think the 8 speed and 3.92 rear end make the Ram suck more gas. The 8 speed is a very smooth shifting transmission, but I think the two additional overdrives give Ford and GM an edge.
My Ram runs 3-400 rpm higher than my F150 did at the same speeds. It is almost always 2k+ RPM while my F150 would never stay above 2k RPM unless I had my foot in it or was towing more than a couple thousand pounds. It loved to run at 1600 RPM.
