New 2025 Chevy Silverado 1500 with 3.0 Duramax

I will be taking my 2025 Silverado on vacation pulling a travel trailer next week. This is my first diesel and see so much about DEF. I have learned by research that this will result in increased DEF usage. My question is about when to add DEF; when I stop for fuel and top it off, or wait until the warning is notifying me? Can I add DEF prior to warning?

Thanks

Hi Don,

I do not have hands-on experience with the 3.0 and filling up the DEF, but here's what I know:
  • You did not mention how far you're going, but I will assume that it's far enough where you will need to put some DEF in it.
  • I would carry with me a jug of DEF when towing. Check the date on the cardboard or the jug to make sure it's fresh and has not been sitting to long in the store.
  • A jug is usually 2.5 gallons. The 3.0 has a 5 gallon DEF tank. This means you can put one full jug when the tank indicates half full.
  • You can definitely fill it up prior to the warning, but DEF can get messy. Try to make sure that you can either put the full jug in, or even better, if you stop at a fuel station that has a DEF dispenser, you can use that to top it off and keep your jug for emergencies.
  • You can check Tim's playlist about his ownership experience over on Youtube here: playlist
  • There's a lot of users on this forum that have a 3.0 diesel, they are super helpful such as @NMTRUCKER @chaseydog and of course @testerdahl
Have a safe trip and take it easy while towing.
