Here at the beginning of 2026, I have to ask if we really need all the features added to tailgates over the last 5+ years. From split openings to tailgates on tailgates, are these features needed or just a sales gimmick? GM Multi-Flex/Multi-Pro Tailgate Perhaps the biggest innovation in the tailgate game comes from GM, the Chevy Multi-Flex and GMC Multi-Pro tailgates are essentially tailgates within the tailgate. I've been happy with the MultiPro on my AT4. I didn’t think I'd like it as much as I do at first, but after using it I'm sold. I not doing any towing so damaging it on a hitch hasn't been a concern.

I would usually pull off the tailgate a few times a year to wash out the bed or brush out the remains of a yard of dirt.

The split bed would work for that.

Even simple tailgates are getting complicated. I need to unplug 3 different harness when removing the tailgate on my Tundra.

But from all the fancy tailgates, I would choose the Ram splitgate. Easier access to the bed, can bring a forklift closer and if you want to climb up, you don’t need a fancy step, just need to open one side and hope on from the middle of the bumper.

I thought they were gimmicky until I used the Ram splitter. Amazing how much easier it is to get right up to the bed and not have to lean over the tailgate. Same with the way the GM has the small door is nice for long lumber as well as a step. The rest of the crap like embedded speakers or using it like a desk is worthless to me.
