How truly great the day will be when I finally drive my first truck home. I've wanted one for years now, but being the tight a&! that I am I haven't let myself spend the money. Now I've got a little business going where I need to haul a trailer, and have 8-10k to spend on a used half-ton. I'm not too familiar with older truck models, but the first ones that come to mind are the Silverado and Sierra 1500s before 2007, when they started to have the fuel management system problem.

Are there any other issues the 2006 and previous models have that I should be aware of before I go test driving? I'll end up poking all over the thing before I go handing over that much money, so if I know what issues to look out for hopefully I'll be able to save myself a lot of headache. After doing a 500 mile search here in the Midwest I'm seeing plenty under 150k miles, and some upwards of 250k, so I'm feeling good about finding one with some life left in it.

I had a 2002 and the cold start knock fear was way overblown. I saw many trucks running300,00 miles.
Good to know these trucks are reaching the 300k mile mark. I think I even saw one advertised at 350k. But this is the first I'm hearing of the cold start knock issue. I typically use both a coolant and oil pan heater during the winter, so maybe that'll help get oil flowing better at startup and avoid this knocking problem. I've never installed one, but I guess pre-oiler systems are still out there if it became an issue.

The only reason I brough up the "CSK" was the fact that people were howling about it on the internet, especially at the now long dead pickup.com forums. I just ignored them and enjoyed my truck. It lasted over twenty years. I'm just saying if you see that in your research, don't put too much in it.

I feel the same way with the lifter failure issue. I know lots of people who drive GM trucks who have no idea there is a “known” problem with lifter failure. It is funny how much the internet can drive fear into you.

Or the Tundra 3.4 engine, a lot of people don’t know about it.

Internet can be both a blessing and a curse.

Yup, I think I’ve shared the story of a golf buddy of mine who bought one a recalled Tundra, somehow the dealer sold it, he blamed the EPA for the recall and was flat out shocked when I told him it was real. Plus, it was really an engine failure issue. He had no idea. Just wanted a new truck, thought Toyota made the most dependable truck so he went and bought one. Zero research and he works on classic cars every day. Young guy too in his young 30s. I’m assuming he will research from now on. LOL
