Glad you guys are open minded to this story. I struggled with this headline, rewrote it at least a dozen times, and with even publishing it. Talking about EVs on a truck channel in any sort of positive light seems like suicide at times. The fact is they tow loads really well and I think most truck guys understand it. And once you get past all the politics and environmental noise, they are really cheap to operate. I think the gas savings is the thing the geeky outlets miss and that's the information truck guys want.
I couldn't care less about the noise or politics. I love the actual idea of an EV. And I wouldn't hesitate if everything I did was within 150 miles or even if I were making unencumbered drives longer distance with known charging at the destination. I love the idea of little to no maintenance, home charging, etc. My problem is that I'm making a 500-mile towing drive with no electricity at the destination.
First hearing of this, can you share the source? I heard that they require more maintenance than people taught, but not more than ICE.I agree with all of that except the less maintenance side. There seems to be lots of mounting evidence that EVs are having just as many if not more issues than their ice counterparts and those problems seem to cause the vehicles to be in repair facilities for significantly longer.

That’s very interesting. I’m wondering if a lot of the initial problems are due to the fact most are new or newer models. Ie: ironing out the problems of a new model car on a never used platform?View attachment 1076
This is just the tip, but you can dig into the reports and studies. Rivian had the worst reliability for a while with huge downtimes. Tim reported on that in a video where he was talking about overall reliability across brands. Across the board, and in trucks especially, EV vehicles have more issues. The problem is exacerbated by very long service times waiting for parts and/or software.
Thanks!View attachment 1076

Yeah I knew about rivian, they ha d a really rough launch. From trucks that would brick themselves, to vampire draining, to suspensions so fucked that rivian would offer a new truck completely, it was a shit show.View attachment 1076

Boy I got blown up in the comments by one dude after making that comment about EVs having more issues. LOL.View attachment 1076

Deifnitely a difference between maintenance and reliability, good point.Reliability is one thing but recurring scheduled maintenance is what I'm talking about. Besides, all the automakers are relatively new to the EV tech and it shows. But it's getting substantially better. EVs still have 42% more problems than ICE vehicles, but that was 79% last year.
And the plug-in hybrids have the worst reliability as a group because you are literally carrying around everything an EV needs as well as everything an ICE needs to function. A Mazda CX90 PHEV is the worst 3-row for reliability according to CR. Of course, some makers/models, like the Rav 4 Prime, have great reliability numbers but that points more to Toyota's experience and technology than anything. Just like Tesla has average reliability now.
