Cold weather DEF exemptions

Last night, I saw this post on Kory Willis’ Facebook page about legislation proposed by lawmakers for Cold Weather exemptions for DEF usage in diesel trucks. I was curious, as you know I can be, and asked a few questions. For the most part, it was a civil discussion. Always tricky with these kinds of things imo.

My question revolved around why this legislation was needed since DEF tank heaters exist. The response was they routinely fail and all this emissions stuff needs to go away since it’s a “climate tax.”

It seems to me the current administration isn’t doing away with diesel emission rules so this bill is DOA since they are asking for an exemption from the Clean Air Act. Notably one person did bring up the Department of Defense exemption in the press release. Long shot, but good point bringing it up.

I know @Fightnfire manages a fleet and several others have more experience than I do in this area.

Another person pointed out the trucking industry was brought to its knees during Covid due to a sensor issue. I have several friends who drive trucks and I follow several trucking news outlets. I must have missed this news. Anybody heard of that?

Strange that nobody else has commented. I did a short video on this too and crickets. The way Kory talked about it, this was an everyday occurrence and every diesel owner knows about very common problem.

I didn’t comment because the bill looks DOA.

The forums are chalked full of people talking about having issues with DEF in cold weather, but usually for truck that are not equipped to deal with cold weather.

I remember reading a threat when the LM2 came out about a guy going to Alberta in the winter from Arizona and getting stuck there because it was -40 out and his truck was not equipped with any heaters that usually come with trucks in cold climates.

The other issue is that def tanks sometimes crack since people fill them up to the brim before a cold snap. The DEF freezes, expands and cracks the tank. This makes towing an even bigger pain in the winter since you can’t fully fill up your tank.

That was my thought as well - this isn’t a bill we need, rather it is either a user error or on the manufacturer to improve the system/s which they have.

It seems to me that, especially lately, many of these bills are focusing on addressing issues that have already been addressed years ago.
