About those screens.....

Tim just talked about a group of people that hate screens and want the smallest ones possible. That got me thinking of when these screens first came out. If i remember, some cars had the screens built into part of the rear-view mirror. Does anyone else remember that? Maybe that could be an option again? 🤔

I had one in my 2013 Tundra. It worked but didn't meet the Federal standard, most likely I haven't looked exactly at the law, and I'm quite certain that's why everyone, including Polaris has gone to a larger screen.

I like the increased resolution of the larger screens for the backup camera. Most of the rest of the screen content is optional in my opinion. A screen big enough to run android auto and apple carplay would be minimal for me.
My previous truck a 2017 ram outdoorsman had the smallest screen at that time 5”. A bit of extra work lining up the old trailer hitch on the smallest screen.
I added a backup camera in the mirror to my 2010 ram 1500 trx4 for safety… a lot of kids in my neighborhood and I was doing maintenance on our student rental on the side at the time… very dangerous backing up.

Planned obsolescence at best…expensive headache down the road at the worst. Wish there were analog options but it’s not likely to go the backwards until everyone is fed up with failing, expensive, screens. Button situation is similar and It’s one reason why i chose a Land Cruiser over the GX550.

My problem with many screens is having too many functions buried in them without redundant buttons (I know a common complaint). Too distracting while you drive. I see some manufacturers bringing back buttons for hvac, heated seats, and rear defrost.
Then again, I still see way too many people looking at their phones when they drive. I guess that’s why cars are getting more nannies every day.

I completely agree. From CarPlay Map I have 4 or 5 screen “clicks” to change the radio station. Used to be 1 button or a twist of a scroll wheel. I’m trying to use voice commands and it’s not confidence inspiring because it understands “tune to AMXXX” one out of 3 times or so.
