.

I wish I had 10 people like you.

The DEF at just $68 is pretty eye opening. I remember when I bought mine, the boo birds were out in force about how much I'd be paying for DEF and using so much of the "panther piss." Man were they wrong.

That was one of the points of this post so that folks could see a “real-world” cost of using this light duty diesel. There continues to be lots of naysayers but do they really know what they’re talking about?
It would be interesting to see if anyone could post the same sort of analysis for a gas motor. I would almost bet that the results would be similar in terms of cost per mile.
How much is gasoline where you are? I can use my numbers with your price and we can compare. I will also use your numbers when it comes to maintenance except for oil changes as everything in Canada is a lot more expensive.

How much is 5 quarts of fully synthetic SAE 5W-30 in the states?

As promised here it is with me averaging 19mpg or 12L/100km over that distance.:

Total Kilometers Driven = 64,500 (40,000mi)
Gasoline Used = 7,968 liters (2,105 Gallons) ($5,704US if average price was 2.71$ per gallon. This is the equivalent of $8,184CAD when converted at the exchange rate)
Diesel Exhaust Fluid Used = N/A
Oil/Filter Changes = 8 ($286 US)
Air Filter Changes = 1 ($25 US)
Cabin Filter Changes = 2 ($24)
Diesel Antigel Additive = N/A
Diesel Fuel System Cleaner = N/A
Rotate & Balance Tires = $70 US (I divided your number by 6 and then multiplied it by 8 to give me that number. Not sure of the origin.)
Total Number of REGENS = N/A
Total Operating Costs = $6,109US
Cost per Mile = 15.27 US cents per mile if I used your wonderful US prices for everything and did my own maintenance.

Now, let's do this exercise with what I actually paid for since I used the dealer to do my service and pay in CAD and not US.

Total Kilometers Driven = 64,500 (40,000mi)
Gasoline Used = 7,968 liters (2,105 Gallons) ($12,430CAD is my actual cost at $1.56CAD/L average price. As you can see, we have a $4,246CAD difference between the number above after the exchange rate and the actual gas price. The extra we pay on our gasoline is taxes...)
Diesel Exhaust Fluid Used = N/A
Oil/Filter Changes = 8 ($960CAD - $670US)
Air Filter Changes = 1 ($50 CAD - $35US)
Cabin Filter Changes = 2 ($50CAD - $35US)
Diesel Antigel Additive = N/A
Diesel Fuel System Cleaner = N/A
Rotate & Balance Tires = Part of the oil/filter service.
Total Number of REGENS = N/A
Total Operating Costs = $13,490CAD or $9,405US
Cost per Mile = 23.51 US cents per mile. This roughly an increase of 1.53 and the exchange rate is at 1.43. The increase is more than what a direct conversion with the exchange rate would be.

I'm surprisingly close if I lived in the US and did my own maintenance but since I'm in Canada, I'm quite a bit more expensive than you are.

To give you and idea, diesel average cost over the past 5 years is around $1.72CAD compare to $1.51CAD for gasoline in my area. I would need to be 1.13 times as efficient to make up the difference in fuel price alone, before any additional maintenance and fluid like DEF, additives, etc.

Thanks for posting this. So if you’re a DIYER the operational cost of gas versus diesel is:
15.27 cents per mile (gas) versus 15.54 cents per mile for diesel. So pretty insignificant in my mind. My average fuel economy is 28 mpg over 19,250 miles. But as you point out the operational cost goes up quite significantly if you have a dealership do the work. Great comparison. 👍👍👍
And keep in mind, this is for a 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor and not a full size truck. The tremor package is not helping me in this case with the lift and bigger more aggressive tires, but I'm still driving a 2.3l turbo vs anything in a full size truck.

If I averaged 14mpg like my cousins are in their F150, my gas cost alone would jump up to $7,743 US at $2.71/gal. This would bring me to 19.36 cents per mile just for gas, no maintenance included.

Great idea for a thread. Here are my first year results on a 24 AT4 3.0L

Miles Driven: 13,447

Diesel Fuel Used: 583.89 gallons ($2041.64)

DEF used: 10 gallons ($40)

Oil/Filter Changes: 3 ($65 each, I did 2, the dealer did the 1 free complimentary change)

Diesel Fuel Additives: $40

Diesel Fuel System Cleaner: $46

Total Operating Cost: $2232

Cost per Mile: 16.5 cents per mile

Typically fill my truck at a local gas station. One of these has a diesel only pump, the other has a diesel/gas pump. Both get used often enough I’m not worried about old fuel. I did my own oil changes at 1313 miles and 10,592 miles; the dealer did the complimentary oil change and tire rotation at 5962 miles. I plan on doing oil changes at 5000-mile intervals. I’ve been using ACDelco DexosD 0w-20, and the ACDelco oil filter.

I rotated the tires again at 10,592 miles. I’m on again off again with my use of additives. Used a bottle of HotShots EDF then stopped for a while. At 7048 and at 10,428 I used Arch Oil A6400-D Fuel System cleaner, and plan on adding this every oil change. I also recently started adding Archoil A-6500 Additive every other tank full.

Edit: Forgot to add about $60 for 2 oil analysis kits.

Thanks for adding your truck operating costs. 👍 So using your total miles and total diesel fuel purchased it looks like your overall fuel efficiency was a wee bit over 23 mpg. Mine was 27.8 mpg but probably some of the main differences is that mine is just an SLT (stock) and yours is an AT4 with larger tires, higher ground clearance and maybe a heavier duty suspension(?). Another difference might be that my driving is like 80% highway/20% city.
Did you see anything out of normal in your oil analysis?
I think the difference in milage is mainly do to my driving 90% city/10% highway. On a long highway run I'm averaging 30 mpg.

My first oil analysis at 1300 miles everything came back within expectations for an engine that was being broken in. I did another one at 10600 which was a bit high on iron. Blackstone said not to worry about at as the engine is still relatively low millage.

I'll be taking to the dealer for my next oil change on Monday. My plan is to change the oil every 5000 miles with the dealer doing every other oil change. This way there will be something on record every 10,000 incase i run into any warranty issues. Unfortunately that means I might not get a sample this go around.

This is a follow up to my recent post concerning a 2 year review of my 2023 GMC SIERRA 1500 SLT. This post details my real-world operational costs of driving and maintaining this vehicle over a two year (+) timeframe.
Total Miles Driven = 19,250
Diesel Fuel Used = 639.10 ($2407.73)
Diesel Exhaust Fluid Used = 13.25g ($68.05)
Oil/Filter Changes = 6 ($360)
Air Filter Changes = 1 ($25)
Cabin Filter Changes = 1 ($12)
Diesel Antigel Additive = $44.95
Diesel Fuel System Cleaner = $24.95
Rotate & Balance Tires = $49.09
Total Number of REGENS = 42
Total Operating Costs = $2,991.77
Cost per Mile = 15.54 cents per mile

I always fill my truck with diesel at a major truck stop (Maverick, Pilot, Love’s) which tend to have higher fuel cost but I trust that the diesel is fresh. The oil used is Mobil 1 ESP X2 0w-20 DEXOS D (AutoZone 37.99/5qt) and filer used ACDelco UPFF-66 ( heavy duty). Air and cabin filters were AC DELCO. The DEF is also AC DELCO.
I have recently found the Mobil 1 oil at WALLY WORLD for $27.97/5 quart jug.
I did not include the cost of insurance as this would have too many variables to consider. So I hope this helps the perspective buyer as to what typical costs you can expect for the GMC 3 liter LZ0 diesel. I do not tow so if you do the fuel and DEF costs will increase.
That’s some solid info. Are the regen cycles annoying, or do they just come and go without much hassle?

I think this thread is especially interesting with the EPA announcement this week to deregulate everything. Many channels are stating this will lead to the removal of diesel emissions equipment that dramatically weaken reliability, engine power and MPG. This seems to run counter to what has been detailed in this thread so far.

I probably wouldn’t know that a REGEN was occurring if I didn’t have a BANKS Idash monitor. Incidentally, BANKS has come up with their next generation IDASH that has bluetooth, better screen resolution, 25% more memory.
Agreed, regens on the 3.0L are pretty seemless, and if it wasn't for the iDash I probably wouldn't know its taking place. I didn’t know they came out with a new model. I'll check ot out but will likely stick with the one I have.
