The 2026 Jeep Cherokee details are out and it will have hybrid power, an iconic design and it will be built in … Mexico? Huh?

While Jeep is skipping building it at its old plant in Illinois, it still needs this compact SUV to be really successful. The past history hasn’t been kind to Jeep.

Two things: 1. my traditional way to link back to the post isn't working right at the moment. I've alerted IT. 2. I changed this title and focus of the article when the plant location hit me squarely in the face this afternoon. We got this information about a week ago. A person on YT said the Illinois plant is too small to build the Cherokee and a midsize Ram truck. I get that, but man with the big push right now to build in the U.S. I just see this as a PR nightmare for Jeep.

Definitely a more appealing look than the last generation which tried to move forward too fast. As for the location, they probably committed to it prior to the tariffs being announced and now they're too far along to change.

While the Cherokee name remains, its soul has been ripped from its near perfectly shaped SJ and XJ body and its proud name plastered on an unrecognizable husk of a body.
Pour one out for another great SUV ruined by modernity.

I remember the previous design getting so much hate when it first came out due to the polarizing headlights.
I’m not sure how it will do in the US. We’ll see if it sells internationally. I’m surprised at the price point.
Every time I think a new vehicle is too expensive when it comes out the next vehicle out surpasses it.
Like Tim likes to say, get the popcorn out and watch what happens.

I totally Agree! I think they are looking for short cuts for short term money. Hopefully if they make any they reinvest in new design.

I continue to be baffled by Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Stellantis in general. Lots of talk...not much walk.
Even if the CEO change brings about improvement it takes years to come up with new design and roll it out. Stellantis has tried to move up market with their pricing. It hasn’t worked so far.
We’ve owned 3 grand cherokees, a Dakota and 3 RAM 1500’s. we moved away from the grand Cherokee after they raised the price so high with the release of the new design(bought an XT5. In my area the RaM 1500 still offers me the best price point(when incentives are on). All have been good cars.
I hope they can get more competitive. More competition in the marketplace is a good thing.

Disappointing, many people like me bought the Cherokee for its size and 4500lbs towing capacity. A 1.6L Turbo instead of a simpler 3.2L, 210hp instead of 271 (-61), 230 torque instead of 239 (-9), but the worst is 3500 instead of 4500 for the towing capacity, not to mention a CVT transmission. Another SUV among so many others, with little usefulness. We are always being pushed towards larger and more expensive vehicles just for decent towing capacity.

Will not for sure change my 2019 for this one. I need 3500-4000 towing capacity which my 2019 provides me!

Hopefully they will have an upgraded engine available later otherwise it will give no bonus points over the competitions.
