Why payload and tailgate ratings matter.

Tow ratings always get the glam shots in reviews but for me it's about payload. You just never know what you're going to end up putting in the bed and how you're going to get it out.



My payload is 1,250 pounds so this rock is no problem, but the tailgate is maxed out at 480 pounds and the rock weighed in at 563 so now I have to figure out how to slide it out of the bed without it crushing the rear bumper on the way down.

That would have been nice. I bought a $30 pry bar instead.

I took off the tailgate and pushed with my legs to get it to the edge of the bed. I then made a ramp from a plastic folding table and slid it onto the ground. After that I wedged the pry bar in-between and raised it up enough for my wife to slide some chucks underneath. Then I went for broke and used the bar and my hands to stand it up.

Tailgates have weird ratings and those ratings are not easy to find.

When I go over, I just put a piece of plywood that goes from the tailgate to the bed, that way it distributes it accros a bigger area.

Could be a good video idea @testerdahl. Comparing the tailgate ratings of the different size and brands of trucks.
