Success with new muzzleloader!

Got meat in the freezer! About 20 mins into the first day of muzzleloader season, 10 mins before sunrise, this deer walked about 40 yards from me and stared at my blind. I was able to put my new rifle into the gun rest, take a breath and squeezed the trigger. He walked about 30 yards and it was all over. Went home, got old Swede and harvested the deer. Nice to have a gun that works well!

Awesome! Great job. No horns for me this year, just meat.

So, what muzzleloader did you get? Still thinking about getting one. I tried a bit of muzzleloader this year and just borrowed my cousin's spare rifle for it.

I bought a CVA Acura 50 caliber from Cabelas. I was going to buy something around $300, but dammit this one was awesome and the best one they had IMO. $700 later… I did get 10% off for Black Friday weekend discount and got a year no interest by signing up for their credit card.

That does look like a good one. I'm still not sold on the idea of getting a muzzleloader. Not sure the juice is worth the squeeze. It's only an extra week of hunting and I already have 8 weeks of rifle. Not counting the special seasons available in Jan. I just don't have that much freezer space!....lol

For us, it is the entire month of December and any species of deer (mule or whitetail), any sex and anywhere in the state for $37. Its a much better deal IMO than what I've been getting for tags in rifle season.

For an extra month? Yep, that's worth it. Right now I pay $130 for 2 buck tags and multiple doe in two states. I'd easily pay for that time in December. I love buck tracking in the snow. Our muzzle season is back in October.

Tim should also figure out a way to hunt in Michigan. I heard they are begging for hunters up there.
I can hunt on my brother's property in Michigan really anytime I want. He has around 80 acres. My issues are he hunts in tree stands well off the ground and it is cold as hell up there this time of year. I'd rather be on the ground with our daytime highs of 50 degrees.

I agree with that. We only use ground blinds and tree stands for the late afternoon sit before dark. And if it's sub 20 degrees or windy, no one bothers with a tree stand. All our day hunting consists of drives or individual still hunting.

Seems many places have extended seasons or bag limits to try to get the herd under control. The worst I know of is in NY. They have an area that has a three-week extra season in January in addition to the three weeks during Nov-Dec. And during both seasons, you are allowed two does.....per day. Comes out to 86 deer possible for one hunter.
