Massive fire in Nebraska

In case you haven't heard, there is a massive fire just east of us, and it is growing. Red flag warnings of high winds every day are not helping. It grew from 300,000 acres to 450,000 acres overnight. It also might grow again tonight. Winds are going west to east, so we should be ok. No word on the cause of the fire, but it could be anything. It has been incredibly dry all winter with a severe drought.

I'm ignorant, are these fires mainly prairie fires? I didn't think there was much forested land outside of a few spots. Living in the PNW were surrounded by fires most of the summer, usually at least a week or two socked in with smoke from Eastern WA or B.C.

Yeah, mostly prairie grasses burning up. It is burning up the summer feed for the cattle.

Basically, it burns up the grasses then hits the tree line on the edges of the fields and explodes. Then, it repeats. The winds have been blowing 60-75 mph from the west pushing the fires. Last night, it blew from the north, thankfully, pushing the fires back into itself.

Today, it is cold and no wind. Tomorrow the wind starts again and then we get some days of 80 degree temps.

I saw an update from the local command team. They have 4 Blackhawk helicopters, planes making better maps and teams from 4 states relieving the volunteer firefighters. Sounds like the firefighters are well fed and stocked for now. Just getting exhausted. It also sounds like it is going to be at least 2 weeks until it is under control.

To be honest, it has been pretty distracting trying to work with all the wind blowing and watching the fire news.
