It's not going to affect me that much because, like you said, It's going to take several years to adjust to this so manufacturers will ignore it because the next administration is just going to reinstate the previous regulations anyway.
 
I think the argument is very clear - do you want to spend more on a vehicle OR more on gas? That seems to be the crux of the argument.

The notion of engines are going to get simpler and all the emissions stuff is going away is just nonsense. Never going to happen. In the past several decades of back and forth administrations on CAFE rules, we’ve never gone backwards.
 
So long as we in the USA have a cloistered truck market because we are scared of competition truck prices will not drop.
In my instance if I had my way and we had an actual free market I would be driving a Toyota Hilux Champ, Toyota Town Ace or a Land Cruise 79 series.
But they are unsafe! none of your business! You are not my master so butt out.
